Home Tour: A Fashion Designer's Pop Art Palace

John Eshaya packs Pucci prints and Andy Warhol pieces into his Palm Springs escape.

DOSSIER: NAME: John Eshaya TRADE: Fashion designer behind t-shirt and denim line JET and former vice president, creative director, and buyer for Fred Segal. VIBE: Pucci and Andy Warhol have a pool party. ABODE: A midcentury modern Palm Springs getaway.

Palm Springs has become a stylish escape for fashionable Angelenos, who leave behind traffic and smog for pool hopping and antiquing in the hot, dry heat. Like fellow fashion designer Trina Turk, John Eshaya, the man behind t-shirt and denim line JET and a 24-year alum of Fred Segal, has come to appreciate the area's treasured midcentury modern architecture, beautifully restoring a 1964 home with a distinct, fashionable perspective.

GROUNDWORK

Laying the foundation for a spirited collection of artwork, textiles, and accessories, Eshaya renovated all the bathrooms in the house -- save for its grand, spa-like master bath which boasts an original pink marble tub and walls -- and installed new flooring throughout. "The terrazzo tiles surrounding the pool influenced the floors on the inside of the house," he says, which he matched to the exterior.

EN VOGUE

A fashion-world veteran, Eshaya was, unsurprisingly, influenced by fashion in his interior design. "I love fashion houses, so when a brand like Gucci, Hermès, or Pucci does a home collection, I have to have it," he says. "They are usually limited quantities of items and very special to have." Bright, graphic Pucci prints in particular reign supreme, donning everything from bath towels to accent pillows to a gilded French settee, which Eshaya upholstered in Pucci terrycloth. "[Pucci] is just so synonymous with summer, vacation, and modern chic," he says. "It works perfectly in the space."

POP UP

Another great influence in Eshaya's design was pop art, which pairs perfectly with his vibrant textiles. "My first piece was the Warhol Liz [Taylor], which I bought in 2002, and after then, it became an addiction!" Eshaya relays that "all the Warhols" are from modern gallery Hamilton-Selway Fine Art in West Hollywood: "Ron Valdez has been helping me with my Warhol collection for years." The designer also owns a Madonna portrait by Mr. Brainwash and photography by kitsch-pop photographer David LaChapelle, and he cites artists Robert Rauschenberg, Banksy, and Takashi Murakami as "pop heroes."

SPECIAL ED

Eshaya's overall goal for the space was for it "to be fun and comfortable with lots of special pieces." He certainly achieved that with one-of-a-kind furniture and décor like a Murano glass chandelier, Louis XV chairs upholstered in Stephen Sprouse for Knoll graffiti-print fabric, and a Brutalist dining table by Paul Evans. For these standout finds, the Rose Bowl Flea Market, the Fairfax Flea Market, eBay, and numerous garage sales, and shops like Palm Springs's Hedge and Bon Vivant, and New York's SPACE107, all proved fruitful. The trick to making all of his funky furniture and fabrics work together? "I like each room to have a different mood and color," he says. He makes it sound so easy.
